What Are Implant Dentures?

A dental implant is a small, screwlike post that is normally made out of titanium. If the right number of dental implants (usually about 4 to 6) are inserted into the jaw, they can act as artificial tooth roots for a denture, keeping it anchored in place while also providing it with chewing power comparable to that of natural teeth.
Some implant dentures stay fixed in place, but others are removable. Both options have their own benefits to consider.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
A fixed implant denture remains in the mouth 24/7. This is seen as a more convenient option by many patients. In particular, since implant dentures can be brushed and flossed like regular teeth, it’s generally easier to take care of them.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures usually don’t require as many implant posts as fixed implant dentures. Thus, a removable implant denture could be a good choice if you have already lost some of the bone density in your jaw. Also, it’s easier to clean underneath a denture that you can take out of your mouth.
The Implant Denture Process

Step one to getting implant dentures is to schedule an initial consultation. This all-important first visit will help determine whether you’re a viable dental implant candidate as well as whether you will require bone grafting or another type of preliminary treatment.
Once the necessary preparations are complete, an outside specialist will place the implant posts inside your mouth. After that, a process called osseointegration will begin; it will allow the implant posts to fuse with the jawbone over the course of 3 to 6 months.
Eventually, the posts will be ready to receive abutments (the connector pieces responsible for keeping the final prosthesis anchored in place). Then all that remains is to design, create, and place a new denture.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You can likely get implant dentures as long as your mouth is still in good health overall, meaning you aren’t currently suffering from gum disease. You will also need to have a certain level of bone density in your jaw. If you’ve lost most or all of the teeth in one or both arches, our team can help you determine whether implant dentures are a good option for replacing them.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

With implant dentures, you will be able to eat all of your favorite foods again, and you can enjoy the confidence that comes with a smile that looks and feels natural. Furthermore, the dental implant posts will help you maintain a strong, healthy jawbone thanks to mimicking the functions of natural tooth roots. Finally, it’s important to note that dental implants can last for decades, provided that they are correctly cared for.
